Featured Designer: Derek Gangi

“Twenty something Derek Gangi is a design student who loves to experiment with new software and improve his skill set, in fact he brings us a short collection of vector art that he created while messing around with a couple of ideas he had. After creating a couple Derek decided that he was pretty pleased with what he had already crafted, and went on to create a whole series in a similar style. What we have here in fact is a slice of the best ones in my opinion, I love the sudden burst of colour these bring to our screens a lot of them look almost like smoke or flames just in a range of colour tones. Derek is currently constructing his personal site which is linked bellow, make sure to check back for the release in the near future.”

80 Stunning Minimalistic Website Designs

“I have really been on a minimalistic kick lately. As you may already know, I designed the first two sites in this roundup and I made an attempt to keep them as simple as possible. I found that “simple design” doesn’t always translate into “easier to make”. Oftentimes I think the simpler a design is, the harder it is to make and the more thought that must be put into making it work well. Here are some other sites I found that also have great minimal designs. Some emphasize typography, others emphasize photos and still others emphasize space and colors.  What’s your favorite? Chime in and let us know!

Psst! Have you heard about our new design news site called Design News Source? It’s got all the best design content all in one place, kind of like your own personal preview channel for the wired design world so you can save time and read better. Nice.”

Design a Slick 3D Ice Text Effect

ice preview

3D text effects are a growing and awesome design trend. They can add angles, lighting and interest that many 2D text effects can’t bring. Here is an awesome Showcase of 3D Typography that was put together a little while back by Angie Bowen. I’ve also been seen and been inspired by tutorials like 3D Text on Fire and this Fresh Text Effect.

After some experimenting with what can be accomplished using Illustrator’s 3D capabilities and Photoshop’s texturing I came up with the design for this tutorial. In the steps that follow you will learn some pretty helpful techniques and tricks all while designing your own slick 3D ice text effect. Let’s get started.
